Remove the background of a photo
An AI model finds the person or the object in your photo and takes away what is behind it — right in your browser, without uploading the photo. Keep it transparent, put a plain colour behind, or blur the original background like a portrait camera.
How it works
- Open a photo. People, pets, products and objects with a clear outline work best.
- Remove background. The first time, the AI is set up in your browser; after that it starts at once, even offline.
- Choose what goes behind: transparent, a colour (white, light grey, light blue or any colour) or the photo blurred, with the amount of blur you like.
- Fix the edges. “Edge softness” and “Keep less ↔ keep more” tune the outline; the Erase and Restore brushes fix any spot by hand.
- Export as PNG or WebP to keep the transparency, or as JPG with the colour behind.
Good to know
- The edge follows the photo's own outlines, so hair and fine edges stay soft instead of cut out.
- Everything stays editable: change the background colour or the blur later, or undo the removal in one step.
- For passport and ID photos, the Passport tool removes the background and puts the colour the rules ask for behind you automatically.
- To take an object out of a photo (a person in the background, a sign, a wire), use Remove Object instead: paint over it and it is filled in.
What people use it for
- Product photos on plain white for an online shop or a marketplace listing.
- A profile picture with a clean colour behind you, for work or social media.
- Cut-outs with a transparent background for slides, posters, stickers and school projects.
- A portrait with the background softly blurred, as if taken with a large-aperture camera.
Questions
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model runs in your browser; the photo never leaves your device.
Which format keeps the transparent background?
PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and TIFF keep it. JPG, BMP and PDF have no transparency, so the background gets a colour (white unless you choose another).
The edge cut off part of the hair. What can I do?
Move “Keep less ↔ keep more” towards more, or paint the spot with the Restore brush.
Why is the first removal slower?
The first time, the AI model is set up in your browser. It is kept for the next times, also without internet.
Can I blur the background instead of removing it?
Yes: choose Blur after the removal and set the amount; the person stays sharp.
Does it cost anything?
No, it is free and needs no account.
